Type 2 Diabetes, did you say it is reversible?
How do I balance my blood sugar, I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes?
Well let’s start with this, did you know that there could be MANY REASONS you have Type 2 Diabetes? Did you know that it can be reversed? Pretty crazy, huh? So not all hope is lost, not even close actually.
In lieu, of the above written, start small! Start with something that will be VERY EASY for you to change.
What is it?
Your body needs insulin - too much or too little can cause chaos in the body.
With Type 2 diabetes there is too much insulin floating around in the body and the body can’t utilize it anymore.
For example, with the holiday season and the pandemic, we are getting most things delivered. When someone knocks at the door to drop off a package you would go grab it. Then there is a second knock 20 minutes later, and you might go grab that one too. Then all of a sudden there is a knock every 10 minutes or so, and you decide to let them all pile up because you don't want to keep getting up and sitting back down. The packages are like the insulin in your body that keeps trying to knock at the front door into the cells for it to be utilized, but the cells just can’t handle anymore because there is just too much! So then you have lots of packages, in this case insulin floating around in the body.
Overtime, certain things like mental stress, physical stress, food we eat, and other factors affect insulin/blood sugar levels. If our blood sugar is chronically spiked it can lead to mood imbalances like depression, chronic illnesses like diabetes, or excess body fat.
Bottom line: Too much stress on body = Chronically high Cortisol = High Blood Sugar
So how can we break the cycle?
Eliminate sugar + simple carbs
Since I am not one to take things away from clients, I would recommend adding more vegetables and complex carb.
***Think sweet potatoes, beets, carrots, parsnips, leafy greens, etc…
Crowd out “junk food” with yummy healthy snacks
This goes back to the above recommendation, fill your kitchen and meals with healthy foods that provide nutrients that help your body thrive instead of just survive.
Hummus or guacamole and carrots, radishes, celery, bell peppers, and cucumbers
Sliced apples and almond butter
A quick nutrient dense protein shake
Naturally high protein and low sugar yogurt with berries
Exercise
As if you needed another to reason to MOVE YOUR BODY! ;)
Practice good sleeping habits
Getting a good night sleep helps lower your glucose levels and on the other hand getting a poor night sleep will restrict your body’s ability to metabolize glucose, not good!
