FAT - The Macronutrient - What it does for the body, why we need it and more!

What healthy fats do:

  • Lubricate our joints

  • Support brain health (Ex. Omega-3's help reduce ADD and ADHD symptoms)

  • Help our hormones communicate (balance mood, keeps skin clear, reduces PMS)

  • Reduce inflammation (help lose weight, balance mood, increase energy and motivation)

SAY "YES" TO:

Omega-3s:

- Walnuts

- Chia seeds

- Salmon

- Anchovies

Other healthy fats:

- Avocado

- Nuts

- Seeds

- Extra virgin olive oil

- Avocado oil

- Coconut oil

SAY "NO THANK YOU" TO:

- Vegetable oils

- Peanut oil

- Canola oil

- Safflower oil

- Sunflower oil

As these have the OPPOSITE effect on the body:

- Increase inflammation

- Disrupt hormone communication

- Lower energy

- Become rancid in the body

Smoking Point:

Did you know oils have an "oxidation point", which can be harmful to your health.

Once the oil reaches its smoking point, it can cause inflammation resulting in aches & pains in the body, headaches, hormone issues, excess body fat, and gut issues.

Here are the smoking points of some common oils that I would recommend for cooking:

  • Avocado oil: 480°F (unrefined) to 520°F (refined)

  • Coconut oil: 350°F (unrefined) to 450°F (refined)

  • Ghee (clarified butter): 375°F

  • Extra-virgin olive oil: 350°F
